Breed (dogs): A breed refers to a group of domestic dogs that have similar physical characteristics and behaviors that are passed down through generations. Breeds are distinguished by certain traits like size, coat, structure, coloring, and temperament.

Kennel: A kennel refers to an establishment for the breeding, raising and training of dogs. A kennel club is an organization that oversees the registration and pedigree tracking of purebred dogs. Kennel clubs maintain breed standards and hold events like dog shows and trials.

Classes/types of dogs:

Working dogs – Bred to perform tasks like herding, guarding, pulling sleds, etc. Example: Siberian Husky

Sporting dogs – Bred to assist in hunting birds and other small game. Example: Labrador Retriever

Hound dogs – Bred for tracking and chasing prey by scent. Example: Beagle

Terrier dogs – Feisty dogs originally bred to hunt vermin and pests. Example: Airedale Terrier

Toy dogs – Bred as companions and lap dogs due to their small size. Example: Chihuahua

Non-sporting dogs – Diverse group with wide variety in characteristics and purpose. Example: Bulldog

Herding dogs – Bred to herd and corral livestock like sheep and cattle. Example: German Shepherd

Companion dogs – Bred as friendly household pets. Intelligent, sociable and easy to train. Example: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
